Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan-Edmonton Chapter

Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan.ca) is a member-based, not-for-profit organization founded in 1996 with thirteen volunteer chapters across Canada. CW4WAfghan is a non-religious, non-political, federally registered charity in Canada. The goals are to advance education and educational opportunities for Afghan women and their families and to educate Canadians about human rights in Afghanistan. Donor-funded projects are implemented and managed in partnership with Afghan civil society organizations, and fall within our two field program areas: (1) Community Libraries & Literacy Program; and (2) Investments in Public Education. Projects within these programs include, for example, a number of community schools, village libraries, in-service teacher training, adult literacy, English language classes, and computer classes.

CW4WAfghan's goal is to raise a minimum of $700,000 per annum to meet our program funding objectives. CW4WAfghan is a federally registered charity, Canada Revenue Agency #887718203RR0001. Members were honoured with the YMCA Calgary Peace Award in the International category for their long-standing contribution to supporting peace and human rights for Afghan women and their families. In Canada, CW4WAfghan has approximately 800 members who have the opportunity to engage together through the regional chapter network. CW4WAfghan has sustained a dynamic group of core volunteers since its inception, which has seen steady growth since our founding. These members serve in a variety of volunteer capacities from leading chapter meetings, to event planning, public outreach and education, and advocacy activities. Other volunteers support the national office’s activities, including serving on one of the national committees, or providing virtual volunteer services such as research and communications tasks. In addition, every year, hundreds of Canadians host Breaking Bread potluck dinners to fundraise for CW4WAfghan’s education projects in Afghanistan. Youth members volunteer through CW4WAfghan’s affiliate organization, the Little Women for Little Women in Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, CW4WAfghan has supported education projects for nearly two decades, with proven project management systems and accountability measures in place, having successfully supported over 350 projects. CW4WAfghan currently has a project portfolio that includes schools and school equipment, teacher training, educational resources, literacy classes and libraries, in eight provinces.
